Love on a Leash®

The North San Diego County chapter was one of the first chapters of Love on a Leash; established in 2001, it is currently our largest chapter. The chapter coordinates multiple group visits each month at senior living facilities, hospitals, schools and libraries in North San Diego County; many members visit additional sites independently. We also participate in community events and have a special connection with Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton.

Meet Our Co-Leaders

Beth Hulsart lives in Carlsbad and is certified with Emily, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Beth is a retired educator and avid volunteer. In addition to working with Love on a Leash, Beth also volunteers with the Friends of the Carlsbad Library and particularly enjoys their Paws to Read program where the youngsters read to the pups. Beth loves the comfort and joy we bring to those folks with whom we share our beloved companions.

Janet Downer has been a certified member since 2014 with her terrier mix, Otis and her English Cream Golden Retriever, Marissa. Janet is retired; in addition to Love on a Leash, she volunteers at community events with the San Diego Humane Society. Her favorite aspect of volunteering with Love on a Leash is reading with children who have learning differences. "A dog doesn't care if they read a word incorrectly; the courage an animal gives a child who finds it difficult to identify words on a page is magical!"
