San Diego Central

Love on a Leash®

The San Diego Central chapter was founded in August of 2010, and is currently our second largest chapter. The chapter coordinates multiple group visits each month at senior living facilities, hospitals, schools, Veterans centers, military bases, the airport and even detention facilities. Several of our chapter members are also involved with the Court Dog program sponsored by the District Attorney’s office. The SD Central Chapter visits take place in San Diego, Coronado, and surrounding cities; in addition to the many group visits that we do monthly, many members visit additional sites independently. We also participate in community events such as the Celebration of Champions (sponsored by Rady Children’s Hospital in honor of children battling cancer) and many local military events such as the Single Marine’s Program on MCAS Miramar, and the Young Sailor’s Program on NAS North Island.

Meet Our Leader

Sue Subkow has been the chapter leader since she founded the chapter in August of 2010; she lives in San Diego and is certified with her Golden Retrievers Charlie, Beau, Kaia and Grace. Sue started the chapter with her original LOAL therapy dog, Kona. She and Kona worked together as a therapy team for nearly 10 years. Sue continues her pet therapy mission in honor of Kona, and her Dad who was an Air Force Veteran. When Sue isn’t volunteering with Love on a Leash, she enjoys other dog-related events with the San Diego Golden Retriever meetup group that she founded in 2005. Sue is proud to serve on the Love on a Leash National Board of Directors and her favorite part about volunteering is continuing to spread love, compassion and kindness to the community.
